So I decided not to go for the obvious, but to use some dyed pelmet vilene scraps and punch holes out to create faux buttons. These lie much flatter on the card. I also dyed the lace with the yellow to age it.
The lavender image comes from a vintage bottle sticker I bought at my local antique book market.

I too tried to get away from the obvious so had to dig deeper into the sewing gear for something to use - but I didn't think of curtain tape stuff!
